Bolivian culture has been defined by its interesting geographical layout, the predominant indigenous population and the mix of ancient traditions with European cultural elements that were imported during the period of Spanish colonialism. The amalgamation of all these elements have produced a rich and varied culture unlike any of the rest of the world. |

In the lowland region of Bolivia, the Jesuit influence on the musical talent of the chiquitos, moxos and guaraní has left a unique legacy that still manifests itself and is kept particularly strong in the musical traditions of the region. The Jesuits encouraged education and the promotion of culture among the indigenous communities. Extremely capable artists and musicians created musical instruments of impeccable craftsmanship and learned to play baroque music. This amalgam of western musical tradition and indigenous talent gave rise to what is now known as the “barroco mestizo”.
